Birdgirl's 30 Days Wild, Day 29 - for diverse communities

This month is 30 Days Wild 2016, an initiative of The Wildlife Trusts who say "This June, can you do something wild each day for a month?"

What they are saying is that nature is everywhere, so by looking for it through your normal day, you should start to notice it and enjoy it more.

They say that they don't want you to give anything up for June, just give yourself time in the wild with your family, to reconnect with nature. 26,000 people have already signed up, but it would be great if you signed up to taking part at http://bit.ly/1WZnYKW.

So, for my 30 Days Wild, I have decided to connect with nature each day in a different way, that could feel relevant to Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities or People of Colour (POC) in the USA and be practical if you live in an inner-city area. Things that BAME people can identify with and so might find it easier to try.  Not just young people, but BAME people of all ages.

For day twenty-nine, go for a walk at the night on a clear night somewhere not very well lit. This might be impossible to do safely in the city but have a look on google earth and see if you can see a likely spot to watch the stars. Or work out when there is a full moon and watch the moon from your home.

Birdgirl's 30 Days Wild, Day 28 - for diverse communities

This month is 30 Days Wild 2016, an initiative of The Wildlife Trusts who say "This June, can you do something wild each day for a month?"

For day twenty-eight, pick up sticks on a walk and then turn them into a dream catcher or anything your children imagine them to be, such as a snake or giraffe.

For day twenty-five, take your children or children within your family or friendships to the park to play and run around. This is the most important thing to do, so it doesn't matter if it's a repeat. Enjoy being outside in nature and absorbing your surroundings.

For day twenty-three, go out to an open space with your friends and family and break your fast together during this month of Ramadan.  If you not Muslim, join some Muslim friends or just for an evening sunset picnic. Make sure where you are going is open after dark, so an open space might be better than a park that gets locked at 9.30 pm.

For day twenty-one, go outside into a garden if you have one, park or green space and do some exercising whilst enjoying the air around you.  I did some star jumps and ballet, but you could go for a run through a park or just some stretching.  Just get outside and do it.

For day twenty, go outside and look up at the night sky as tonight was a full moon, or just look out of a window.  If you're lucky, you might even see some stars.  Feel a connection with the worlds above.

Tonight was also the summer solstice, the longest day of the year where many people go to Glastonbury Tor for sunrise, so it was special to have this and a full moon.

Great Knot in RSPB Titchwell Reserve

On Sunday 19 June 2016 we travelled to RSPB Titchwell reserve to see a Great Knot.  It was a fairly straight forward twitch, as the bird was on one of the pools most of the time we were there.

It is always nice to get across to Norfolk and do a bit of birding before we came back.

This was my fourth new bird of the year and a great one to see. Great Knot are from Asia and also a bird you see in Australia, so a bird I could identify without any problem as I have seen it few times abroad including in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
